Where do you find the GAF Timberline data sheet, and what does it tell you?
Short answer. GAF posts data and specification sheets in the Product Documentation section of each Timberline product page on its website. The sheet lists the shingle's dimensions, exposure, pieces and bundles per square, nails per square, fire and wind ratings, impact class and code approvals, which is what permit offices, HOAs and insurers ask to see.
Where to find it
Go to the GAF page for the exact line, such as Timberline HDZ, UHDZ, NS or AS II, and open the documentation list. For HDZ it includes the Timberline HDZ Shingles Spec Sheet, brochures, technology sell sheets and a safety data sheet.
Reading the numbers, using Timberline HDZ as the example
- Dimensions: 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches, nominal.
- Exposure: 5 5/8 inches, the part of each course left showing.
- Pieces and bundles per square: 64 pieces, 3 bundles.
- Nails per square: 256, which is four per shingle.
- Fire: UL 790 Class A, the highest fire rating.
- Wind: ASTM D7158 Class H and ASTM D3161 Class F.
- Impact: UL 2218 Class 3 for HDZ on labeled packages; UHDZ with UltraMat and AS II list Class 4.
- Code listings: ASTM D3462 and ICC evaluation listings that building officials recognize.
Who asks for it
- Building departments: sometimes with a reroof permit application.
- HOAs: along with a color sample.
- Insurers: to verify an impact rating for a discount. The wrapper or invoice showing the labeled product helps too.
Data sheet vs warranty
