What makes GAF Timberline dimensional shingles dimensional?
Short answer. Dimensional means the shingle is laminated from two layers, so it has thick and thin areas that cast shadows and mimic wood shakes; dimensional, architectural and laminated are three names for the same type. GAF builds that depth into every Timberline line, with HDZ adding shadow bands in its color blends and UHDZ adding a second, dual shadow line.
How a flat material looks three dimensional
- Two layers: a top layer with irregular cutouts sits over a solid backer strip. Where the backer shows through, the surface steps down.
- Shadow bands: darker granules along certain areas mimic shadows and exaggerate the depth.
- Random tab widths: uneven tabs break up the pattern so the roof does not look like rows of identical pieces.
How the Timberline lines differ in depth
- Timberline NS: a subtler, natural shadow look at a lower price.
- Timberline HDZ: High Definition color blends with patented shadow bands, plus the Bold Definition colors for stronger contrast.
- Timberline UHDZ: thicker, with a patented Dual Shadow Line for the deepest wood shake look.
- Timberline AS II: standard Timberline look, with SBS modified asphalt for Class 4.
Dimensional vs 3-tab
3-tab shingles are a single layer with regular slots, which gives a flat, uniform pattern. Dimensional shingles are heavier, more wind resistant, and carry longer warranties, which is why they dominate Georgia reroofs.
Why the depth helps beyond looks
- The thick, random pattern hides small deck irregularities better than 3-tab.
- Laminated layers add mass and stiffness.
- On LayerLock lines, the overlapping zone becomes the wide StrikeZone nailing target.
