How does the GAF Timberline shingle warranty work?
Layer 1: the standard limited warranty
Every Timberline shingle is in GAF's Lifetime category. You get non-prorated coverage for manufacturing defects during an initial Smart Choice period, then prorated coverage for the rest of the term. It applies automatically, but keep your invoice showing the product and installation date.
Layer 2: enhanced system warranties
When the roof is installed by a GAF certified contractor using GAF shingles plus a minimum number of qualifying GAF accessories, such as starter strips, ridge caps, leak barrier, roof deck protection and ventilation, it can be registered for an enhanced warranty. GAF's System Plus tier extends the non-prorated period on manufacturing defects well beyond the standard warranty. Higher tiers, offered only by GAF's top-tier contractors, add GAF-backed coverage of the contractor's workmanship for a period of years. The contractor must register these, usually soon after installation, so ask for the registration certificate.
Layer 3: the contractor's workmanship warranty
Most roof problems in the first decade are installation problems: nails placed outside the nailing strip, missing starter at the rakes, bad flashing, poor ventilation. Manufacturer warranties exclude those. The roofer's workmanship warranty is what covers them, and terms range from a year or two to decades depending on the company.
What every layer excludes
Hail, falling trees and other storm damage are insurance matters, not warranty claims. Algae and wind coverage have their own terms. Leaks from metal flashing are typically excluded from the shingle warranty.
Practical steps
Get the product name, accessories list, installation date and any registration in writing, and store them with your house records. Warranty terms change over time, so the version in effect when your roof was installed is the one that applies. More in roofing warranties explained.
