Is GAF Timberline Natural Shadow the same as Timberline NS?
Why two names
Natural Shadow is the long form; NS is the shorthand GAF and suppliers use on product pages, invoices and wrappers. Retail listings may still say Timberline Natural Shadow. If you are comparing quotes, the name difference alone does not mean a different shingle, but check that both list the same color and accessories.
What is in the bundle
- A nominal 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inch shingle with a 5 5/8 inch exposure, three bundles to the square, the same as HDZ.
- Two-layer laminated construction with a subtle, even-toned shadow line.
- A lifetime limited warranty, which GAF ties to installing at least three qualifying GAF accessories.
- A 10-year algae warranty on StainGuard labeled packages, versus 25 years on HDZ with StainGuard Plus.
Natural Shadow Charcoal
Charcoal is part of the NS palette. It reads as an even, deep gray with soft shadowing. Because NS and HDZ use different blends and profiles, an NS Charcoal roof and an HDZ Charcoal roof will not look identical side by side, which matters when you need repairs.
Who chooses it
NS makes sense for tight budgets, rentals and homes being readied for sale. Owners staying longer often step up to HDZ for its stronger wind and algae terms. See architectural vs 3-tab shingles and roofing warranties explained.
