What is the impact rating of GAF Timberline shingles?
Ratings by line
- Timberline HDZ: Class 3.
- Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat: Class 4, on packages with the UltraMat logo and Class 4 statement.
- Timberline AS II: Class 4.
- Older lines and other products: check the wrapper, spec sheet or job records; an older roof may have been sold without any rating.
What the classes mean
UL 2218 drops steel balls twice on the same spot and checks for cracks. Class 3 survives a 1.75-inch ball from 17 feet; Class 4 survives a 2-inch ball from 20 feet. Class 4 is the highest rating.
Why the package statement matters
GAF ties each rating to packaging that carries the classification statement, so the rating follows the bundle, not the product name alone. When your roof is installed, photograph a wrapper showing the statement and keep it with the invoice. That pairing is the proof an insurer or buyer may ask for.
Rating is not a hail warranty
GAF states that it makes no warranty about impact performance against hail and that hail damage is not covered under its limited warranty. The rating improves your odds; your homeowners policy covers storm damage.
Using the rating with your insurer
Some insurers offer a premium credit for impact-rated roofs, most often for Class 4. Call your agent with the product name and class before you choose, and ask exactly what documentation they accept. For broader context, see impact-resistant shingles in Georgia and Georgia hail season.
