How do you find the best rated architectural shingles?
Short answer. To find the best rated architectural shingles, compare three things in order: the product's verified lab ratings for wind, impact and fire; the strength of the manufacturer's warranty, especially the non-prorated period and any enhanced system coverage; and the credentials and reviews of the contractor who will install it. A top rated shingle installed poorly will not perform like its rating.
Step 1: check the verified ratings
Look for top wind classes (ASTM D3161 Class F or D7158 Class H), a Class A fire rating, and the UL 2218 impact class that fits your hail risk. These are printed on the wrapper and spec sheet. Our impact-resistant shingle guide explains the classes.
Step 2: compare warranty strength
- Non-prorated period: how many years the manufacturer pays full value before coverage starts to decline.
- What is covered: material only, or labor and tear-off too.
- Enhanced system warranties: longer coverage when a certified contractor installs the full accessory system and registers it.
- Wind and algae terms: the conditions attached to each.
- Transferability: whether coverage passes to a buyer if you sell.

Step 3: rate the installer
- Manufacturer certification, which is required for the strongest warranties.
- Years in business and a written workmanship warranty.
- Recent reviews from homeowners nearby, not just a star count.
- Proof of insurance, and a clear contract that never waives your deductible.
