Architectural shingles vs composition shingles: what is the difference?
What composition means
A composition shingle is built from several materials composed together: a fiberglass mat for strength, asphalt for waterproofing, and ceramic coated granules for UV protection and color. Older composition shingles used an organic felt mat. Contractors and insurance estimates often shorten it to comp.
The two main types of comp shingle
- 3-tab: a single flat layer with cutouts that create three tabs. Flat look, lighter weight, lower cost, and usually lower wind ratings and shorter warranties.
- Architectural, also called laminated or dimensional: two layers bonded together so the shingle has thick and thin areas, creating shadow lines. Heavier, better wind performance, longer warranties, and the standard on most Georgia homes today.
How estimates describe them
Insurance and contractor estimates often list roofing as laminated comp shingle or 3 tab comp shingle. If your home has architectural shingles and the estimate says 3-tab, ask for a correction, since the material and labor prices differ.
Other terms you might hear
- Designer or luxury shingles: heavier composition shingles made to mimic slate or shake.
- Impact resistant shingles: composition shingles that passed UL 2218 testing, rated Class 3 or Class 4.
Which to choose
For a full replacement in Georgia, architectural is the practical choice for most homes. 3-tab has become hard to find in many colors, which also complicates repairs on older 3-tab roofs. Read architectural vs 3-tab shingles and impact-resistant shingles in Georgia.
