What are GAF Timberline HDZ RS shingles?
How reflective shingles work
Ordinary granules absorb much of the sun's energy, especially in dark colors, and the shingle surface gets very hot. Reflective granules bounce more of that energy back, including much of the invisible infrared part of sunlight, so the roof surface runs cooler while still looking like a normal shingle. Reflective products are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, whose directory lists measured values for each color.
What stays the same
HDZ RS is built on Timberline HDZ, so it shares the familiar dimensional look and GAF's HDZ construction. Ask your supplier for the current spec sheet for impact and wind details on the RS version.
Is it worth it in Georgia?
Georgia homes are not generally required to have cool roofs, so this is a comfort and efficiency choice. It makes the most sense when:
- You want a dark roof but worry about summer heat.
- Your HVAC ducts run through the attic, as they do in many Georgia homes, so a cooler attic helps them.
- The roof faces strong south or west sun with little shade.
The product was developed largely for West Coast cool roof markets, so stock and colors in North Georgia may be limited and the price higher. Ask before you plan around it.
What it will not do
A reflective roof does not replace attic ventilation or insulation, and real energy savings vary by house. Often the cheapest path to a cooler attic is fixing ventilation. See attic heat and shingles and the best shingle colors for Georgia heat.
