Shingle Options at Robust Roofing: GAF Architectural, UHDZ, Class 4 and Color
Walk into any shingle conversation and the jargon arrives fast: laminated, HDZ, UHDZ, Class 3, Class 4, algae resistant. A few of those words change how a roof handles a Georgia hailstorm or a July heat wave, and a few are mostly marketing. Robust Roofing keeps the choice simple: a solid GAF standard, a short list of meaningful upgrades, every option priced in writing, and honest advice about which one fits your house. Every option also goes down over synthetic underlayment, where Georgia's residential code still permits basic No. 15 felt.
The standard: GAF architectural shingles
Robust Roofing's GAF certified crews install GAF architectural shingles as the standard on its replacements. Architectural, also called laminated or dimensional, means two layers of asphalt and fiberglass bonded together, which gives the roof shadow lines and depth instead of the flat, uniform look of an old three-tab roof. On a Georgia house today, architectural is the sensible starting point; three-tab survives mostly on sheds. Our guide to architectural versus three-tab shingles explains the difference.
GAF's Timberline HDZ is the architectural line most homeowners know by name. GAF rates it UL 2218 Class 3 for impact on packages that carry the Class 3 statement, and its wide StrikeZone nailing area helps crews place nails where the manufacturer wants them, which matters when summer storms push wind across the roof.
The premium upgrade: GAF Timberline UHDZ
Timberline UHDZ is GAF's premium version of the line. GAF describes it as about 20 percent thicker than HDZ, with a Dual Shadow Line that gives a deeper, more shake-like look from the street. Its most practical feature for North Georgia is impact resistance: GAF rates Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat as UL 2218 Class 4 on packages bearing the UltraMat logo and the Class 4 statement. GAF also pairs it with a longer algae-resistance limited warranty than HDZ, which helps on shaded, humid lots where black streaks show up.
Impact-resistant Class 4 shingles
Class 4 is the top rating under UL 2218, a lab test in which steel balls up to 2 inches across are dropped onto a shingle sample; to pass Class 4, the sample must show no cracking after two hits from the largest ball. In hail country that matters, but keep three honest points in mind:
- Not all Class 4 shingles perform alike. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety publishes its own hail ratings, and products that share the Class 4 label do not all score the same.
- Discounts are up to your insurer. No Georgia law requires a discount for Class 4 shingles alone. Ask your agent before you buy, and keep the wrapper label and invoice.
- Tougher is not invincible. Even on its Class 4 products, GAF's limited warranty excludes hail damage, so a big enough storm is still an insurance matter.
Our guides to impact-resistant shingles in Georgia and Robust's impact-resistant upgrades, plus Robust's own look at whether Class 4 is worth it, run the numbers further.
Choosing a color
Color is the decision homeowners live with longest, and it is personal. A few practical points help:
- Look at real roofs, not swatches. A small sample under kitchen lights looks nothing like a whole slope in Georgia sun. Drive past homes with the colors you like at different times of day.
- Match the fixed parts of the house. Brick, stone and trim are not changing. Warm brick usually suits browns and weathered blends; gray siding and white trim usually suit charcoals and grays.
- Heat is real but modest. Darker roofs absorb more sunlight, as the U.S. Department of Energy's cool roof guidance explains, but on a shingle roof good attic ventilation does more for the roof's life than color. See our guide to shingle colors for Georgia heat.
- Check availability. GAF's palette includes names like Charcoal, Pewter Gray, Weathered Wood, Barkwood, Shakewood and Slate, but not every color is offered in every line or every region.
In the RoofMap homeowner portal, Robust Roofing lists your options and colors with their prices, so you can compare them with your family instead of deciding on the spot.
HOA rules come first
Many North Georgia neighborhoods have an architectural review board that approves roof color and style, and some limit choices to a short list. Get the approval before materials are ordered, not after. Because the portal shows the exact product and color in writing, you have what most boards ask to see. Our pages on HOA approvals with Robust and HOA roof approval in Georgia cover the process.

Why the choice is easier with Robust Roofing
A shingle is only as good as its installation, which is why Robust's GAF certified crews install every option to GAF's instructions on top of a complete system: full tear-off, decking checked board by board, ice-and-water barrier, synthetic underlayment, new metal and corrected ventilation. Standard shingle warranties from the major manufacturers cover material defects, not installation mistakes, so every roof carries Robust's 50-year labor warranty in writing on top of the manufacturer's coverage. That combination, along with a 5.0 rating across 66 Google reviews (above the 4.42-star average BrightLocal found for local businesses on Google), is why Robust Roofing is the first name North Georgia homeowners hear when they ask who to trust with a new roof.
