Should you upgrade to impact-resistant shingles with Robust Roofing?
Robust Roofing installs impact-resistant shingles the way it installs every roof, past the code minimum. Georgia's residential code can allow new shingles over one existing layer, but Robust tears every replacement off to the decking and checks the deck board by board, so a Class 4 shingle never goes down over a deck nobody has looked at.
What "impact-resistant" actually means
Impact ratings come from the UL 2218 test, in which steel balls are dropped onto an installed roof sample. To earn Class 4, the highest class, a shingle has to survive two hits from a 2-inch steel ball released 20 feet above it without cracking through. Because that test is pass or fail, the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) runs its own lab ratings using ice hailstones, and those results show real differences between products that all carry the Class 4 label. The guide on impact-resistant shingles in Georgia covers the testing in depth.
The GAF options Robust Roofing installs
Robust Roofing is GAF certified and installs GAF shingles. GAF architectural shingles are the standard on most homes, and upgrades are offered on every replacement:
- GAF Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat, a thicker, more dimensional architectural shingle that GAF lists as Class 4 impact rated.
- Other impact-resistant Class 4 lines, which Robust Roofing can quote alongside UHDZ so you can compare look and price.
For context, GAF labels Timberline HDZ packages with a Class 3 impact rating. Your quote names the exact product, and the shingle options page compares the lines.
When the upgrade makes the most sense
- Your neighborhood sees repeat hail. Check your city's roof report or the free North Georgia Hail Map for recent hail days. See also Georgia hail season.
- You plan to stay. The value of fewer hail claims and less hassle builds over years.
- Your insurer offers a credit. Some do, voluntarily. Ask before you choose.
- You want a heavier look anyway. UHDZ adds depth to a roofline, so the upgrade buys appearance and toughness together.
It may matter less if you are selling soon, if the budget is better spent on decking, flashing or ventilation, or if your area rarely sees hail. Robust Roofing will tell you which camp you are in. Its own guide, are Class 4 shingles worth it in Georgia, works through the decision.
Hail is not hypothetical here
The roof reports on this site pull radar hail estimates and National Weather Service reports for each city. A few dates from Robust Roofing's service area: hail estimated near 1.86 inches on June 26, 2025 in the Roswell, Johns Creek and Alpharetta reports; about 1.75 inches on April 10, 2025 in the Cumming report; and about 1.38 inches on September 5, 2026 in the Braselton report. Stones that size can damage ordinary shingles, which is exactly the situation an impact-resistant roof is built for.
The insurance discount: ask, do not assume
No Georgia law requires insurers to discount a roof just because the shingles are Class 4. Georgia's 2024 HB 279, now O.C.G.A. 33-32-11, requires a premium discount or rate reduction for homes certified to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard, a separate program with its own construction requirements and an evaluator's certificate. Some insurers choose to give a credit for impact-resistant roofs, and the size of that credit differs from company to company. Before you pick a shingle, have your agent confirm whether your policy qualifies and which documents count as proof. Robust Roofing keeps your agreement naming the exact product, your invoice and your install photos in the RoofMap portal, ready to send.
What impact-resistant shingles do not do
- Tougher is not invincible. Big stones driven by wind can still bruise or break a Class 4 shingle.
- The manufacturer will not pay for hail. GAF's limited warranties exclude hail damage on every line, impact-rated ones too, so a damaged Class 4 roof still goes through insurance.
- They do not fix a bad install. A Class 4 shingle over soft decking, reused flashing and a cooking attic is still a weak roof.
That last point is why Robust Roofing installs every upgrade as part of the same complete system: full tear-off, decking checked board by board, ice-and-water barrier where water concentrates, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, flashing and pipe boots, and corrected ventilation. See Robust Roofing workmanship standards.
Adding the upgrade to an insurance claim
If a covered storm loss is paying for your roof, the carrier generally pays to replace like kind and quality. Upgrading to a Class 4 shingle is usually your choice and your cost for the difference, unless your policy says otherwise. Robust Roofing shows that difference in writing before you decide, and a pay-over-time option at checkout can spread a smaller balance out. Robust Roofing's licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff, which Georgia does not require of roofing companies, documents the storm damage and writes the repair scope; the upgrade is a separate line you control. More at impact-resistant shingles and the insurance discount.
HOA neighborhoods
Most Class 4 shingles look like standard architectural shingles from the street, so approval usually comes down to color. Robust Roofing assembles the HOA packet with the exact product and color; see HOA approvals.
