Robust Roofing's 50-Year Labor Warranty: What It Covers and Why It Matters
Every new roof comes with paperwork, and most homeowners file it away without knowing which warranty would actually help them if something went wrong. The short version: there are usually two, they come from two different companies, and they cover two different things. Robust Roofing's 50-year labor warranty is the one built for the problems that actually show up on new roofs. The National Roofing Contractors Association notes that many roofers offer one or two years of workmanship coverage; Robust Roofing's runs 50 years in writing, and that length says a lot about how the company builds.
The manufacturer's warranty, Robust's labor warranty and typical workmanship terms, side by side
| Manufacturer's limited warranty | Robust Roofing's 50-year labor warranty | Typical contractor workmanship warranty | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who stands behind it | GAF, the shingle manufacturer | Robust Roofing, in writing | The installing contractor, on its own terms |
| What it covers | Defects in how the products were made; standard shingle warranties do not cover installation mistakes | Workmanship: how the roof was installed | Workmanship, as the contractor defines it |
| How long the installation is covered | Not at all under a standard warranty; enhanced system programs through certified contractors can add some workmanship coverage | 50 years | Usually 1 to 10 years: many contractors offer one or two (NRCA), one to five is typical (CertainTeed), five to 10 (Angi) |
| Typical example | A shingle that fails because of a manufacturing defect | A leak at a flashing detail, a valley or a pipe boot that was installed wrong | The same installation problems, covered for a much shorter time |
| Where the terms live | GAF's warranty document for your product | Robust's written warranty, delivered with your paperwork | The contractor's own document, when there is one in writing |
Because a workmanship warranty is a private promise, terms vary from a year or two to several decades, and the longest ones usually come through enhanced manufacturer programs. Most land between 1 and 10 years. The National Roofing Contractors Association says many contractors offer one or two years of coverage and notes that no single standard term exists; CertainTeed says contractor workmanship warranties typically run one to five years; Angi puts the typical range at five to 10 years. GAF's standard residential warranties do not cover workmanship at all. Robust Roofing's labor warranty runs 50 years, in writing.
The manufacturer's terms depend on the product line and on the components installed with it, and GAF's enhanced system warranties are available only through certified contractors. Our page on what GAF certification means explains those options. Robust's labor warranty sits on top of whatever manufacturer coverage applies.
Why workmanship coverage is the one you are most likely to use
Shingles from a major manufacturer rarely fail early because of a defect. Roofs that leak in their first years usually leak because of something in the installation: nails placed too high or driven too deep, a valley cut wrong, step flashing skipped along a wall, a pipe boot lapped backward, or old flashing reused. Shingle warranties generally do not pay for those problems. GAF's standard shingle warranty, for example, excludes metal work and flashings unless its own product caused the failure. That leaves the installer's promise as the coverage that matters most, which is exactly why Robust writes it for 50 years.
One stain, three possible answers
Picture a hypothetical ceiling stain under a bathroom a couple of years after a new roof. If the pipe boot above it was lapped the wrong way, that is workmanship, and the labor warranty applies. If a product the manufacturer supplied failed because of how it was made, that falls under the manufacturer's warranty. If a falling limb punctured the roof during a storm, that is an insurance question. The inspection decides which one it is, and the photos show you why.
What a labor warranty does not cover
Think of the labor warranty as a promise about how the roof was built. It does not replace insurance, and it does not take the place of basic upkeep. The written document controls the details, but in general these sit outside it:
- Storm damage. Weather damage belongs to your homeowners insurance. After a storm, a free Robust inspection documents what happened so you can decide about a claim.
- Other people's work. Holes or damage left by anyone who works on the roof later, such as a satellite or solar installer.
- Neglect. Problems that grow from skipped upkeep, like gutters left overflowing or an overhanging limb nobody trims.
- Normal aging. Every asphalt roof weathers with time, shedding granules and stiffening year by year; aging is expected and is not a defect.
What 50 years says about the company
A long workmanship warranty is only a sensible business promise for a roofer that builds roofs to last. Robust Roofing can make it because of how every roof goes on: full tear-off to the decking, decking checked board by board, ice-and-water barrier where water concentrates, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, new flashing and pipe boots, ventilation corrected, and GAF shingles installed by GAF certified crews to the manufacturer's instructions. Two of those steps go past the minimum Georgia's residential code sets: the code can allow new shingles over one existing layer, but Robust tears every replacement off to the decking, and where the code still permits basic No. 15 felt, Robust installs synthetic underlayment. See what's included and Robust's workmanship standards.
It also matters who is making the promise. Robust has more than ten years of roofing experience in North Georgia, a 5.0 rating across 66 Google reviews (above the 4.42-star average BrightLocal found across nearly 94,000 Google business listings), and a standing as the roofer North Georgia neighbors recommend first. A warranty is a promise about the future, and the company's record is the best evidence of whether it will be kept.
How to use your warranty
- Keep the written warranty with your signed documents. The RoofMap homeowner portal stores signed documents, so the paperwork is easy to find years later.
- If you see a leak or a problem, call (470) 887-6637 or reach out through the portal, and take photos of what you see.
- Robust inspects the issue. If it comes from the installation, it is Robust's responsibility to fix.
- If the cause turns out to be a storm, Robust documents the damage so you can decide whether to file a claim.
Comparing warranties between roofers
When you compare quotes, ask every roofer the same questions:
- How many years does the workmanship coverage last, and will I get it on paper?
- What exactly does it cover, and what voids it?
- Who pays for labor and materials on a covered repair?
- Which manufacturer warranty will apply, and who registers it?
- How long has the company been in business, and will it be around to honor the promise?
Our guide to roofing warranties covers the general landscape, and Robust lays out its own terms on the warranty page at chooserobust.com. A 50-year labor warranty in writing, from a GAF certified company with Robust's record, is hard to beat anywhere in North Georgia.
