How much do the shingles for a new roof cost?
The main shingle tiers
- 3-tab: flat, single layer, lighter. Fewer manufacturers still make them, and they have lower wind ratings and shorter lives.
- Architectural (dimensional): laminated layers that give a shadowed look. This is the standard choice on most Georgia homes today.
- Designer: heavier laminated shingles that mimic slate or shake, often packaged in more bundles per square.
- Impact resistant (Class 4): engineered to pass the UL 2218 hail test; costs more than standard architectural.
How shingles are bought
Shingles are sold by the bundle, and most architectural lines take three bundles to cover one square, or 100 square feet. Hip and ridge caps and starter strips are separate products. Color usually does not change the price within a line.
Why buying your own shingles rarely saves money
Contractors buy at trade pricing, and enhanced manufacturer warranties require that a certified installer supply and install the full system of shingles and accessories. Homeowner supplied materials can void workmanship coverage and leave you on the hook for shortages or wrong colors.
Choosing the tier
Think about how long you will stay, how often your area sees hail, and whether your insurer gives a credit for Class 4. See architectural vs 3-tab shingles, impact resistant shingles in Georgia, and shingle colors for Georgia heat.
