Georgia Roof Guide

What should an ice and water shield installation guide cover?

Short answer. A complete installation goes location by location: a full-width sheet centered in each valley, patches around pipes, vents, chimneys and skylights, strips turned up roof-to-wall joints behind the flashing, and eave or low-slope coverage where needed. Each piece is lapped so water flows over seams, applied to a clean, dry deck within the product's temperature range, and covered within its exposure limit.

Valleys

Center a full 36 inch sheet in the valley, pressing it into the crease without bridging, so it lies tight to both slopes. Start at the bottom and lap upper pieces over lower ones. Keep shingle nails away from the valley center, as the shingle instructions specify.

Pipes and vents

Cut a square of membrane with a hole sized to the pipe, slide it over, and press it down. Some installers add a second piece above it lapped downward. The pipe boot then goes over the membrane.

Chimneys

Apply membrane to the deck around the chimney and turn it up the masonry several inches, using primer on the brick if the manufacturer requires it. The step flashing and counterflashing go over it. See chimney leaks and crickets.

Skylights

Follow the skylight maker's instructions first; many specify membrane around the curb before the flashing kit. See replacing skylights with the roof.

Roof-to-wall joints

Run a strip along the joint, lying on the deck and turned up the wall behind the house wrap or siding. Step flashing goes over it with each shingle course.

Eaves and low slopes

Start at the eave over the drip edge and work upslope. Low-slope sections may need full coverage.
