How much does it cost to repair roof shingles?
Short answer. Repairing a handful of damaged or missing shingles usually costs a few hundred dollars, because most of the price is the service call, setup and labor rather than the shingles themselves. The cost rises with the number of shingles, a steep or high roof, decking damage underneath, and difficulty matching an older or discontinued shingle.
How shingle repairs are priced
- Service minimum. Getting a crew, ladder and materials to your house has a base cost, so replacing one shingle and replacing ten cost closer together than you might expect.
- Labor per shingle. Each damaged shingle means releasing the seal on the courses above, pulling nails, sliding in the new piece, nailing and resealing.
- Pitch and height. Steep or two-story roofs need fall protection and slower work.
- Matching. The same color and style matters. A discontinued shingle may mean salvaging from a hidden area or accepting a slight mismatch.
- Hidden damage. Soft decking under a blown-off area adds cost.
The matching problem
Shingles fade and weather, so even the same product from a new bundle looks a little different at first, and product lines change over time. If a storm damaged scattered shingles on an older roof and no match exists, a repair can look patchy, and on an insurance claim that matching issue may become part of the discussion about how much of the roof to replace. See partial roof replacement and matching.
When shingle repair stops paying
- The roof is past about 20 years with widespread granule loss.
- Shingles crack or crumble when lifted for the repair.
- You have needed repairs more than once in a year or two.
