GAF Timberline vs Owens Corning Duration: which is better for a Georgia roof?
Short answer. Both are top-selling architectural shingles and either can make an excellent Georgia roof; the better choice usually comes down to the specific product, color, warranty and installer rather than the brand. Timberline HDZ uses GAF's LayerLock and StrikeZone and is Class 3 on labeled packages, while Duration uses Owens Corning's SureNail strip and carries a 130 mph wind warranty, and both brands offer Class 4 versions.
The core shingles
- Nailing technology: Duration's SureNail is a woven reinforcing strip across the nailing zone that gives installers a visible target and grips fasteners. HDZ's StrikeZone is a wide nailing area, with LayerLock fusing the layers beneath it.
- Wind: Owens Corning's data sheet lists a 130 mph wind warranty for Duration. GAF's WindProven warranty on HDZ has no maximum wind speed when qualifying GAF accessories are installed.
- Algae: HDZ carries a 25-year algae warranty on StainGuard Plus packages, and Owens Corning's U.S. data sheet lists a 10-year StreakGuard algae warranty for Duration. Confirm current terms, since they change.
Impact-rated options
For hail, GAF offers Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat, Class 4 on labeled packages, and Timberline AS II. Owens Corning offers Duration FLEX and Duration STORM, both Class 4. Availability of impact-rated lines varies by region, so ask North Georgia suppliers what they stock.
How to decide
- Pick the color you like in each line, using full-size samples.
- Compare the warranty you will actually get, including the non-prorated period and what the installer adds.
- Check that starter, ridge cap and underlayment come from the same manufacturer, which enhanced warranties require.
- Choose the installer you trust most. A great roofer with either brand beats an average roofer with the other.
