GAF Timberline vs CertainTeed Landmark: which shingle is better?
Short answer. Neither is clearly better: Timberline HDZ and Landmark are both well-established laminated architectural shingles with lifetime limited warranties, and on most Georgia homes the installer matters more than the brand. On paper, HDZ stands out for LayerLock construction, a wide StrikeZone nailing area and a Class 3 rating on labeled packages, while Landmark is known for CertainTeed's NailTrak marked nailing zones and a lineup that includes the heavier Landmark Pro.
Where they differ on paper
- Nailing area: HDZ uses GAF's wide StrikeZone with LayerLock fusing the layers; Landmark uses CertainTeed's NailTrak printed nailing lines.
- Wind warranty: HDZ is eligible for GAF's WindProven warranty, which GAF says has no maximum wind speed, when installed with qualifying GAF accessories. CertainTeed lists a 110 mph wind warranty on Landmark with an upgrade available. Both depend on correct installation.
- Impact: HDZ is UL 2218 Class 3 on labeled packages. Check the wrapper or data sheet of any Landmark product for its rating, since ratings vary by product.
- Algae: both sell algae-resistant versions, and both makers have changed coverage lengths over time. Read each current warranty.
- Lineup: Landmark has a heavier Pro version; GAF's step up is Timberline UHDZ.
What matters more
Each manufacturer's enhanced warranties require a credentialed contractor and that maker's own starter, ridge cap and underlayment, so the real choice is often which brand your roofer is certified to install. Mixing brands can limit warranty options.
Questions to ask any roofer
- Which exact product and color, and which warranty will be registered?
- Which starter, ridge cap, underlayment and ventilation products?
- How many nails per shingle, and where?
- What does your own workmanship warranty cover, and for how long?
Color availability at North Georgia supply houses can also tip the decision, since a stocked color is easier to match for repairs later. More in roofing warranties explained and how to choose a roofing contractor in Georgia.
