What are GAF Timberline Solar shingles?
How the system works
Instead of bolting racks through the shingles, the installer nails flat solar energy shingles directly to the roof deck in the sunniest section and surrounds them with standard Timberline shingles. Wiring runs under the system to an inverter, the same as any home solar setup. In February 2025 GAF Energy introduced a second-generation energy shingle rated at 57 watts each, with a profile under a quarter inch thick.
Integrated solar vs panels on racks
- Looks: integrated shingles sit nearly flush, which many HOAs and homeowners prefer.
- Penetrations: no rack lag bolts through the roof, because the energy shingles are part of the roof covering.
- Output: conventional panels usually produce more power per square foot, so an integrated array may need more roof area for the same production.
- Service: repairs to an integrated system need someone trained on that system, so ask who services it locally.
Questions to ask in Georgia
GAF Energy consolidated its manufacturing in Texas in late 2025 and said it was focusing on the markets where solar is most compelling, so ask whether trained installers are active in your area before you plan around it. Price the project without the federal residential solar credit, which ended for homeowner-owned systems after 2025, unless your tax preparer tells you otherwise. Solar of any kind works best on a south-facing roof with little shade, and the roof itself should be new or nearly new, since the solar portion is meant to stay in place for decades.
