GAF Timberline NS vs HDZ: which should you choose?
Short answer. Choose Timberline HDZ if you plan to stay in the home for years, have shade and algae, or care about wind warranty coverage; choose Timberline NS if budget is the main driver or you expect to sell soon. Both are GAF laminated shingles of the same size, but HDZ adds LayerLock construction, WindProven eligibility, a 25-year algae warranty on StainGuard Plus packages and a Class 3 impact rating on labeled packages.
Side by side
- Construction: HDZ has LayerLock and the wide StrikeZone nailing area; NS does not.
- Wind warranty: HDZ is eligible for WindProven with qualifying GAF accessories; NS is not.
- Algae: HDZ 25 years with StainGuard Plus; NS 10 years with StainGuard, labeled packages only.
- Impact: HDZ is Class 3 on labeled packages; NS carries no rating.
- Colors: HDZ has the widest palette, including the 2026 Bold Definition colors.
- Price: NS costs less per bundle. Tear-off, labor, underlayment and flashing cost the same either way, so the gap on a whole job is smaller than the bundle price suggests.
Three common situations
Forever home under oaks in Cobb or Cherokee County: HDZ. Shade means algae, and you will live with the roof for decades.
Selling within two years: NS is reasonable. Buyers and inspectors care that the roof is new and properly installed; few ask which line it is.
Rental on an exposed hilltop: HDZ's wind terms may be worth the step up, while a sheltered rental can do fine with NS.
Insurance note
Many insurer discount programs are written around Class 4, so a Class 3 rating may not earn a credit. Ask your agent before counting on one.
