Georgia Roof Guide

How do GAF Timberline AS II shingles compare with other Timberline shingles?

Short answer. Timberline AS II is GAF's SBS-modified Class 4 shingle, while Timberline HDZ is the mainstream line rated Class 3 on packages bearing that statement, and Timberline UHDZ is the thick premium line that GAF now rates Class 4 through its UltraMat fiberglass mat. AS II gets its toughness from rubberized asphalt, UHDZ from a heavier mat, and HDZ offers the most colors at the lowest price of the three.

Side by side

Flexible vs reinforced

Both Class 4 options passed the same test by different routes. SBS shingles flex under impact and stay more pliable in cold weather. A reinforced mat shingle resists impact through added strength and mass. Either way, GAF does not warrant any shingle against hail damage.

How to choose

  1. Want Class 4 with the standard Timberline look? Price AS II.
  2. Want Class 4 plus a thicker, more dramatic look? Price UHDZ, and check the bundles for the UltraMat logo.
  3. Want the most colors and lowest cost? HDZ, which still carries Class 3.

Insurance and availability

Insurance discount programs usually reference the UL 2218 class, not how the shingle reached it, so ask your agent whether Class 4 earns a credit and what proof they need. Colors and stock vary across Georgia, so confirm what local suppliers carry. See impact-resistant shingles in Georgia and roofing warranties explained.
