What are GAF Timberline architectural shingles?
Short answer. GAF Timberline is the brand name for GAF's family of architectural, or laminated, asphalt shingles. The lineup includes Timberline HDZ, the best-selling core line; Timberline UHDZ, a thicker premium version; Timberline NS, a value-oriented line; Timberline AS II, a Class 4 impact-resistant SBS shingle; and the reflective Timberline HDZ RS.
The main lines
- Timberline HDZ: launched in 2020 to succeed Timberline HD. It uses GAF's LayerLock construction and wide StrikeZone nailing area, and GAF rates it UL 2218 Class 3 on packages carrying that statement.
- Timberline UHDZ: thicker, with deeper shadow lines. GAF says its UltraMat fiberglass mat earns a UL 2218 Class 4 rating on packages bearing the UltraMat logo and Class 4 statement.
- Timberline NS (Natural Shadow): a value-priced line with a subtler, more even-toned look.
- Timberline AS II: made with SBS polymer modified asphalt for flexibility and a Class 4 rating.
- Timberline HDZ RS: the Reflector Series, with solar reflective granules for cool roof requirements.
Warranty basics
Timberline shingles carry GAF's lifetime limited warranty, with separate algae and wind terms. Longer, more comprehensive system warranties are available when a GAF certified contractor installs the shingles with qualifying GAF accessories such as starter strip, underlayment, leak barrier and ridge cap.
Which fits a Georgia home
- Most homes: HDZ, for its color range and Class 3 rating.
- Curb appeal or repeat hail: UHDZ, or AS II if you prefer the standard look.
- Tight budget: NS, if it is available locally.
- Hot, sunny exposure: HDZ RS is worth asking about, though it was designed mainly for West Coast cool roof codes.
