What are the best architectural shingle brands?
Compare product lines, not logos
Every big brand sells several tiers, from value laminates to premium and impact resistant lines. Comparing a brand's entry level shingle to another's premium line tells you nothing. Line up equivalent tiers and compare:
- Impact rating: none, Class 3 or Class 4 under UL 2218, shown on the package.
- Algae warranty length: and whether it requires labeled packages.
- Wind warranty: the speed limit, and which accessories it requires.
- Nailing area: wider targets make correct installation easier.
- Non-prorated period: the early years when the warranty pays full replacement value for a defect.
Local supply matters in Georgia
A brand with strong distribution in North Georgia means colors are in stock, delivery is quick, and years from now a repair after a storm can match. A shingle that is hard to source locally can complicate matching on a partial repair or claim.
The installer program
Each manufacturer certifies contractors, and the longest enhanced warranties are only available through certified installers who use the full system of matching accessories. A great shingle with poor installation will not perform.
