What is the price of architectural shingles per square?
Short answer. A square is 100 square feet of roof, usually three bundles of standard architectural shingles, and the shingles themselves are only part of what you pay per square installed. Because material prices change with the supplier, product line and season, the more useful number is the whole-roof price: roughly $8,000 to $16,000 for a typical North Georgia replacement.
What a square is
Roofers measure in squares of 100 square feet. Standard architectural shingles usually come three bundles to a square, while heavier designer lines can take four or more. Your roof's square count comes from measuring every plane and adjusting for pitch, as explained in how roofers measure a roof.
Why a per-square shingle price misleads
The shingle cost per square is a fraction of the installed cost. A complete roof also includes:
- Waste factor for cuts at hips, valleys and rakes, often 10 to 15 percent on cut-up roofs.
- Tear-off, disposal and dumpster or trailer.
- Underlayment and leak barrier.
- Drip edge, starter strip, hip and ridge caps.
- Pipe boots, flashing and ventilation.
- Replacement decking where needed.
- Labor, which rises with pitch and complexity, plus permit costs where required.
Two quotes with the same per-square number can describe very different jobs, so compare written scopes instead.
