How long do architectural shingles last?
Lifetime warranty vs actual life
A lifetime limited warranty covers manufacturing defects, usually at full value for an initial period and prorated after that. It is not a promise that the roof will last your lifetime, and it does not cover storm damage, poor installation or poor ventilation. The number that matters is service life, and that depends on conditions.
What shortens their life in Georgia
- Attic heat: a poorly vented attic bakes shingles from below every summer.
- Sun exposure: south and west slopes age first.
- Hail: bruises break the mat and loosen granules, even when nothing looks torn.
- Wind: broken sealant strips let shingles flex and crease.
- Moisture and debris: moss, leaves and pine straw hold water against the surface.
- Installation errors: high nailing or a missing starter strip shorten life no matter how good the shingle is.
What extends it
Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, clean valleys and gutters, trimmed trees, quick repairs after storms, and a careful install all help. Lighter colors run a little cooler on the surface, which can help too.
Signs they are near the end
Heavy granule loss in the gutters, curled or cupped edges, cracks, brittle shingles that no longer reseal, and leaks around flashing are all signs. Older 3-tab shingles usually wear out sooner, often in the 15 to 20 year range. For the full picture, see how long a roof lasts in Georgia, attic heat and shingles, and signs you need a new roof.
