What is GAF Timberline Midnight Mesa?
Bold Definition in brief
GAF built the Bold Definition collection by remixing popular High Definition colors with more contrast in the granule blend: Cliffside from Pewter Gray, Chestnut Valley from Barkwood, Sierra Sand from Weathered Wood, and Midnight Mesa from Charcoal. GAF positioned the collection as the successor to the striking looks of its earlier American Harvest and Harvest Blend colors.
How Midnight Mesa differs from Charcoal
Charcoal reads as a fairly uniform deep gray from the street. A higher-contrast blend puts lighter and darker granules side by side, so the roof shows more texture and movement, especially in low morning or evening light. It still reads as a dark roof overall, which keeps it compatible with white farmhouse siding, gray brick and black trim.
Georgia considerations
- Heat: like any dark roof it absorbs more sun. Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation matters more than color for shingle life.
- HOAs: a new color name may not be on your subdivision's approved list even if it looks close to Charcoal. Submit the product sheet.
- Repairs later: a newer color can be harder to source years from now than a long-running one, so keep a few spare shingles.
- Performance: it is still Timberline HDZ, so the same LayerLock construction and Class 3 rating on labeled packages apply.
See it for real
Contrast blends look very different on a small swatch than across a whole roof. Ask for full-size shingles and look at them outside. See the best shingle colors for Georgia heat and HOA roof approval in Georgia.
