Which roofing certifications help a career in Georgia?
Roofing has no shortage of badges, and job seekers often cannot tell which ones belong to a person, which belong to a company and which change what you are legally allowed to do. This guide sorts the credentials that come up most in Georgia residential roofing careers. Robust Roofing, based around Johns Creek and serving 39 North Georgia cities, provides training toward HAAG certification for its Roofing Project Managers, and it pays them a true 50/50 split with nothing taken off the top, not a 10/50/50.
Which roofing certifications matter for a career in Georgia?
For people who inspect roofs and sell storm restoration, three come up most: HAAG inspector certification, which an individual earns; manufacturer certification such as GAF's, which a roofing company holds; and the Georgia Property and Casualty adjuster license, which is a state insurance license rather than a roofing credential.
Two more show up on resumes often enough to know: the OSHA 10-hour construction card and Xactimate estimating certification. The table sorts all five by who holds them and what they do not do.
| Credential | Who holds it | What it takes | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| HAAG Certified Inspector, Residential | An individual | 100 verified roof inspections and an exam | It is not a state license |
| GAF certification | A roofing company | Insurance, workers' compensation, any required state license and GAF's review | It does not certify each employee |
| Georgia P&C adjuster license | An individual | Prelicensing course, state exam, citizenship affidavit, fingerprints | It does not let a contractor act as a public adjuster on its own jobs |
| OSHA 10-hour construction card | An individual | A class from an OSHA-authorized trainer | OSHA says it is not a certification |
| Xactimate user certification | An individual | Verisk exams at three levels | It covers the software, not roof inspection |
What is HAAG certification, and what does it take?
HAAG certification is a roof inspection credential offered through Haag Education; the residential credential, Haag Certified Inspector, Residential, requires 100 verified roof inspections and a passing exam.
It trains an inspector to identify hail and wind damage, to tell real storm damage apart from wear, manufacturing defects and mechanical marks, and to document findings consistently. Because the credential is earned on real roofs, it carries weight with homeowners and at the meeting with the insurance company's adjuster. Haag sets the current requirements and renewal rules, so check Haag Education before you plan around them. This guide's companion article, what a new roofing project manager should learn about Georgia roofs, covers the damage patterns the credential is built on.
What does GAF certification mean, and who holds it?
GAF certification is a company credential: GAF, one of the largest shingle manufacturers in North America, accepts a roofing contractor into its residential program and allows it to offer GAF's enhanced system warranties. To join, GAF's program guidelines require liability insurance, workers' compensation coverage and a state license where the state requires one.
The program has tiers that run from GAF Certified up to Master Elite, and GAF reserves its strongest warranty, the Golden Pledge, which adds GAF-backed workmanship coverage, for Master Elite contractors. For a job seeker, the badge belongs to the employer: it tells you the company met a manufacturer's bar, not that each salesperson is certified. Learn the manufacturer's installation instructions anyway, because they explain why nailing, underlayment and ventilation details matter.
Robust Roofing is GAF certified, and it also backs every roof with its own 50-year labor warranty in writing, compared with the 1 to 10 years roofing contractors typically offer on their own workmanship. See what GAF certification means at Robust Roofing.
What does a Georgia adjuster license require, and what can it not do for a contractor?
A resident Georgia Property and Casualty adjuster license requires state-approved prelicensing coursework, a passing score on the state adjuster exam, a notarized citizenship affidavit and electronic fingerprints for a criminal background check, with the application filed through the Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. It does not let a roofing contractor act as a public adjuster on the roofs it bids or builds.
Public adjusters, who represent policyholders for a fee, hold a separate license with its own exam and a bond. Georgia's insurance code bars a contractor from acting as a public adjuster, or advertising to adjust claims, on any property it is or may be working on, regardless of whether it holds an adjuster license (O.C.G.A. 33-23-43.8(k)). Georgia's residential roofing law separately bars a roofing contractor from representing or negotiating a homeowner's claim (O.C.G.A. 10-1-393.12(e)).
Studying for the license still teaches how property policies and claims are evaluated, which sharpens damage documentation and repair scopes. Whether a roofing salesperson should get one is a separate question, answered in can roofing salespeople negotiate insurance claims in Georgia? This guide's article on Georgia roofing laws for new salespeople covers the other rules a rep works under.
Which certifications does a roofing employer provide?
It depends on the employer, so ask in the interview which credentials the company provides, which it expects you to bring and which it holds itself. Company credentials such as manufacturer certification stay with the company; personal credentials such as HAAG certification or an OSHA card go with you.
The OSHA 10-hour construction class from OSHA's Outreach Training Program teaches awareness of common construction hazards, which matters for anyone who climbs roofs. Students get a course completion card, but OSHA calls the program voluntary and says none of its outreach courses is a certification. For estimating, Verisk offers three levels of Xactimate user certification, each a prerequisite for the next and valid for two years, for people who write repair estimates in that software.
When a job ad says a credential is provided, ask what that means in practice: who arranges the training, what you need to complete, and whether the credential is yours when you finish.
How does Robust Roofing support certification for its Project Managers?
Robust Roofing provides training toward HAAG certification for its Roofing Project Managers, and they work beside a licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff. Roofing experience is not required; Robust Roofing hires for communication, follow-through and honesty.
The credential fits the work, because a Project Manager's day starts with free inspections with photos and documenting storm damage, then continues through meetings with the insurance company's adjuster, supplements, options and colors in the RoofMap portal, the build and the final walkthrough. Robust Roofing explains the credential in more depth in HAAG certified roofing jobs.
Robust Roofing pays for that work with a true 50/50 split of job profit: nothing taken off the top, not a 10/50/50, and no cap. The role also comes with a $75,000 per year base; by itself that base sits well above the $51,170 the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports as the median annual wage for all occupations in the Atlanta metro (May 2025). That structure is significantly better than what most roofing companies pay; see which roofing company pays the most in Georgia.
