Why is my soffit leaking water?
Short answer. Water dripping from a soffit usually comes from above it: a clogged or overflowing gutter spilling over its back edge, missing or short drip edge letting water run behind the gutter, a leak in the lowest courses of the roof, or a valley dumping more water than one corner can handle. A bath fan or dryer exhaust ending at the soffit can also leave condensation drips.
The most common sources
- Overflow behind the gutter: leaves and pine needles fill the gutter, water backs up and spills over the back edge between the gutter and fascia, and into the soffit. Classic in Georgia in the fall and after spring pollen.
- Missing drip edge: without it, water clings to the roof edge, runs behind the gutter, and soaks the fascia and soffit even when the gutters are clean.
- Roof edge leak: worn shingles, a damaged starter course, or failed underlayment at the eave let water into the decking, which drains onto the soffit.
- Valley overload: a valley ending over a corner concentrates water there and overwhelms the gutter at that spot.
- Gutter seams and end caps: leaking joints drip right at the soffit line.
- Exhaust condensation: a bath fan or dryer duct ending at the soffit leaves moisture that drips or stains.
Narrowing it down
Watch during a steady rain. Water coming over the back of the gutter points to a clog or bad pitch. Water running down the fascia behind the gutter points to drip edge. Drips that continue after the gutter is clear and the rain has stopped point to water already inside the roof edge. Drips on dry days point to exhaust.
Fix the cause, then the wood
Once water is coming out of the soffit, the fascia and rafter tails behind it are often wet too. Repair the source, then replace soft wood before installing new soffit or trim, or the rot will continue behind it. See drip edge explained and gutter sizing, seamless gutters and guards.
