Which roof shingles are the best?
Short answer. For most Georgia homes the best roof shingle is a quality architectural shingle from a major manufacturer, installed as a complete system with matching starter, ridge cap and underlayment. If hail is a recurring problem or your insurer offers a discount, a Class 4 impact resistant architectural shingle is the better pick, and designer shingles make sense mainly for appearance.
Best by situation
- Best value for most homes: architectural (laminated) shingles. Good wind ratings, lifetime limited warranties, and about 20 to 30 years of real service in Georgia.
- Best for hail country: Class 4 impact resistant shingles with rubberized asphalt, rated under UL 2218. North Georgia sees regular spring hail, and some insurers discount premiums for Class 4 roofs.
- Best for looks: designer shingles that mimic slate or shake. Heavier and pricier, and sometimes required by upscale HOAs.
- Best for shaded, humid lots: any line with algae resistant granules and a long algae warranty.
- Best for heat: lighter colors or reflective shingles. See best shingle colors for Georgia heat.
What 3-tab is still good for
3-tab shingles cost a little less but have lower wind ratings and shorter warranties. Today they mainly make sense for matching an older roof during a repair, and fewer lines are made each year.
The part that matters more than brand
Every major manufacturer makes good shingles. The difference between a roof that lasts and one that fails early is usually installation: nailing, ventilation, flashing, and using the system components that earn the stronger warranty. Ask any contractor which system they install, what warranty paperwork you will receive, and who stands behind the labor. See architectural vs 3-tab shingles and impact resistant shingles in Georgia.
