How often should gutters be cleaned?
Short answer. Most Georgia homes need their gutters cleaned at least twice a year: once in late fall after the leaves are down and once in late spring after pollen, oak tassels and seed pods. Homes under heavy pines or big oaks often need three or four cleanings a year, while a house on an open lot may get by with one.
Set the schedule by your trees
- Few or no trees near the roof. Once a year, plus a quick look after major storms.
- Mixed hardwoods nearby. Twice a year: late fall after leaf drop, and late spring.
- Heavy pines. Three or four times a year. Pines drop needles year round, with heavy drops in fall, and spring pollen binds needles into a mat.
- Large oaks overhead. Late spring is critical, because oak tassels and pollen pile up fast, then again after the acorns and leaves fall.
A Georgia calendar
- Late March to May. After pine pollen season and oak tassels. This clears the yellow sludge before summer thunderstorms arrive.
- Mid-summer check. Look from the ground during a storm. Overflow means a clog.
- Late November to December. After most hardwoods have dropped. In the mountain counties leaves fall earlier; in south Georgia some oaks hold leaves longer.
Signs you are cleaning too rarely
Water spilling over the front during moderate rain, plants growing in the gutter, gutters pulling away from the fascia under the weight, staining on siding below, washed-out mulch or clay at the drip line, and mosquitoes around standing water. Any of these means bump the schedule up.
Reducing how often
Trimming limbs back from the roof reduces the load. Fine mesh guards can stretch full cleanings to an occasional brush-off. And if clean gutters still overflow, the problem is size or slope, not frequency. See our Georgia roof maintenance checklist and pine needles and leaves on the roof.
