How much do architectural shingles cost per square?
Short answer. A square is 100 square feet of roof, and the per-square price you hear from a contractor may mean the shingle material alone or the whole installed job, so always ask which. Installed per-square quotes vary widely with pitch, layers, decking and accessories, which is why the honest comparison is the total for the same measured roof, not the per-square headline.
Material per square vs installed per square
Material per square is just the shingles: for most architectural lines, three bundles. Installed per square is meant to cover everything, but contractors differ on what everything includes. One quote may fold in tear-off, underlayment, ridge cap and drip edge; another may list them separately.
How the squares are counted
- Measured area. From a satellite or drone measurement report or a hand measurement, in squares of actual roof surface, not house floor area.
- Waste. Added for cutting at hips, valleys and rakes, commonly around 10 percent for simple roofs and more for complex ones.
- Ordered squares. Measured area plus waste, rounded up to full bundles.
If one quote uses 28 squares and another 34 on the same house, one of them measured wrong or applied a large waste factor. Ask to see the measurement.
Why same per-square price, different total
- Steep pitch or two-story height surcharges.
- Extra layers to tear off.
- Decking replacement, often priced per sheet.
- Ice and water barrier in valleys and at walls.
- New ventilation, pipe boots, chimney flashing.
- Permit fees.
Making a fair comparison
Put each quote on the same measured squares and list what each includes line by line. Better yet, budget by the whole roof; in North Georgia, a typical full replacement runs roughly $8,000 to $16,000. See how roofers measure a roof and roof replacement cost in Georgia.
