How long does a roof repair take?
Short answer. Most residential roof repairs take one to a few hours once the crew is on site: a pipe boot or a few shingles is often an hour or two, while rebuilding chimney flashing or replacing a section of decking can take most of a day. The longer wait is usually scheduling, matching materials, weather and, for storm damage, the insurance process.
Typical on-site time by repair
- Pipe boot replacement: about an hour.
- A few damaged or missing shingles: one to two hours, longer if matching is tricky.
- Step flashing on a short wall: a few hours.
- Chimney reflashing with new counterflashing: half a day to a full day, and longer if a cricket is added.
- Valley repair: half a day or more.
- Decking replacement under a section: a few hours to a day, depending on the area.
What stretches the timeline
- Storm backlogs. After a big Georgia hail or wind event, demand spikes and calendars fill. A tarp holds in the meantime.
- Material matching. Discontinued shingle colors may require a search or special order.
- Weather. Roofers do not open a roof in rain, and cold weather affects shingle sealing.
- Insurance. On a claim, the adjuster inspection, estimate and any supplement come before the permanent repair, which can take weeks.
- Hidden damage. Rot found once shingles are lifted adds time.
Leaks are urgent
If water is coming in, ask for a temporary fix or tarp right away, then schedule the permanent repair. Every rain on an open leak adds damage. See common causes of roof leaks and what to expect from a roof inspection.
