How long does a roof inspection take?
Short answer. A thorough roof inspection on a typical home usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour, including the attic and photos. Large, steep or complex roofs, or a storm damage inspection with detailed documentation, can take an hour or two.
What takes the time
- Ground walk around: a few minutes to look at roof lines, gutters, fascia and collateral damage like dented vents.
- Roof surface: the bulk of the visit on a walkable roof, checking each slope, marking and photographing damage.
- Drone flight: fast on steep or high roofs, often faster than walking.
- Attic: several minutes with a flashlight, longer if access is tight.
- Explaining findings: walking you through photos and answering questions.
What makes it longer
- Steep or multi level roofs that need extra safety setup.
- Many penetrations: skylights, chimneys, dormers.
- Storm damage that needs test squares and detailed photo documentation.
- Active leaks that require tracing water from the attic to the roof.
Insurance adjuster inspections
An adjuster visit for a claim is often in the same range, 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the roof and how much damage must be documented. Having your roofer present can help make sure nothing is missed.
When you get results
Many roofers show photos and explain findings on the spot, with a written estimate the same day or within a few days. Insurance estimates usually take longer.
