How long do GAF Timberline HD shingles last?
Short answer. A GAF Timberline HD roof typically lasts about 20 to 30 years in Georgia, depending mostly on attic ventilation, nailing quality, sun exposure and storm history. Because GAF replaced Timberline HD with Timberline HDZ in 2020, every HD roof is now at least several years old and many are 10 to 20 years in, which is when condition checks start to matter.
Where your HD roof probably stands
- Under 10 years: usually in good shape unless a storm damaged it. Granule loss should be minimal.
- 10 to 20 years: watch for granules in gutters, rounded tab corners, scattered cracked or lifted shingles, and wear around pipe boots, whose rubber collars often fail before the shingles.
- 20 years and up: plan ahead. Brittle shingles, bare spots and recurring leaks mean the roof is near the end.
What shortens HD life in Georgia
- Hot, poorly vented attics that cook shingles from below.
- South and west slopes in full afternoon sun.
- High nailing, a known risk on the narrower nailing area of older laminates, which leaves shingles prone to slipping and blow-offs.
- Hail bruising that cracks the mat and lets granules wash away.
- Debris piles in valleys that hold moisture.
Warranty status
Timberline HD carried GAF's lifetime limited warranty with a non-prorated Smart Choice period of about 10 years on the standard warranty. On older roofs coverage is now prorated, and it covers manufacturing defects only, not wear, ventilation problems or storm damage.
