How do you install gutter guards yourself, step by step?
Short answer. Clean and flush the gutters, fix any sagging or leaking sections, measure each run, then cut the guard panels to length and fasten them to the gutter's front lip and back edge or fascia, overlapping sections and closing every end and corner. Choose a style that does not require lifting shingles, and work from a stabilized ladder rather than leaning on the gutter.
Before you start
- Buy guards sized for your gutters, usually 5 or 6 inch K-style, plus end caps and corner pieces.
- Gather tin snips, a cordless drill, the screws supplied with the guard, gloves, and a ladder with a stabilizer or standoff.
- Pick a dry, mild day, and avoid hot afternoons when shingles are soft and slick.
Step by step
- Clean and flush: remove all debris and run water through each section to confirm the downspouts flow.
- Fix the gutter: tighten or replace loose hangers, reseal leaking seams, and correct sags, since guards make these harder to reach later.
- Measure each run: note lengths, corners and downspout locations.
- Start at a downspout end: set the first panel with its front edge on the gutter lip and its back edge on the gutter's back edge or against the fascia below the drip edge, as the instructions show.
- Fasten: drive screws through the front edge into the lip at the spacing the maker specifies.
- Overlap: lap each new panel over the previous one in the direction the water flows.
- Cut corners: miter panels at inside and outside corners so they meet without gaps.
- Close the ends: install end caps so debris and pests cannot slip in sideways.
- Test: run a hose on the roof above and watch the water go in.
What not to do
Do not pry shingles up to slide a guard under them; that breaks the seal strip and can complicate the shingle warranty. Do not rest the ladder on the gutter. See gutter sizing, seamless gutters and guards and drip edge explained.
