How do GAF Timberline Ultra HDZ shingles hold up to Georgia hail and heat?
Hail
Hail in North Georgia ranges from pea size to occasional golf ball or larger stones in strong spring storms. A Class 4 shingle generally resists the common sizes better than standard shingles, so a storm that would bruise ordinary shingles may leave a UHDZ roof with only cosmetic marks. Very large or wind-driven hail can still damage any shingle.
Two cautions: only UltraMat labeled packages carry the Class 4 rating, so keep the wrapper or invoice, and GAF's limited warranty excludes hail damage. Hail remains an insurance matter even on a Class 4 roof.
Heat
Summer sun pushes shingle surface temperatures far above the air temperature. Over the years heat drives off the oils that keep asphalt flexible, and a hot attic adds heat from below. UHDZ's thickness helps it age well, but GAF's instructions require proper ventilation, and a roof over a poorly vented attic ages faster no matter the line.
Humidity and algae
UHDZ carries a 30-year algae warranty on StainGuard Plus PRO packages, which matters on shaded, humid Georgia lots.
Wind
Thunderstorm gusts are a more frequent Georgia threat than large hail. LayerLock and the wide StrikeZone make correct nailing easier, and the WindProven warranty requires qualifying GAF accessories.
What cancels the advantage
- Nails driven high, crooked or overdriven.
- Missing starter strip at eaves and rakes.
- Blocked soffit vents or mixed exhaust vent types.
- Foot traffic and pressure washing that strip granules.
