Georgia Roof Guide

Are GAF Timberline shingles rated Class 3?

Short answer. Yes, GAF's mainstream Timberline HDZ shingle is rated UL 2218 Class 3 for impact resistance, but GAF specifies that the rating applies only to shingles sold in packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 3 classification statement. Class 3 means the shingle withstood a 1.75-inch steel ball dropped from 17 feet, one step below the top Class 4.

Ratings across the Timberline family

How to confirm yours

Look at a leftover bundle in the garage or attic for the UL 2218 statement, or ask your installer for the product documentation and invoice. If your roof was installed some years ago, do not assume it carries the rating; check the records from that job.

What Class 3 does for you

It means better resistance to the moderate hail that hits Georgia most springs than an unrated shingle. It is a lab comparison with steel balls, not a promise about a particular storm, and very large or wind-driven hail can still cause damage.

Insurance

Many insurer discount programs are written around Class 4, not Class 3. Ask your agent before counting on a credit.

Not a hail warranty

GAF states that it makes no warranty about impact performance against hail and that hail damage is not covered under its limited warranty. Storm damage is an insurance matter. For more, see impact-resistant shingles in Georgia and Georgia hail season.
