What is the cost to replace a ridge vent?
Short answer. Replacing an existing ridge vent on a typical North Georgia home often costs somewhere from a few hundred dollars up to around $1,000, with long, steep, or two story ridges at the higher end. Because the slot is already cut, most of the cost is labor, new cap shingles, and the vent itself, which is relatively inexpensive per foot.
What goes into the price
- Ridge length. Vent material and cap shingles are priced by the foot or bundle, so a 60 foot ridge costs more than a 30 foot one.
- Pitch and height. Steep roofs and two story homes require more safety setup and slower work.
- Cap shingles. The old caps rarely survive removal, so new hip and ridge shingles are part of the job. Matching color on an older roof can be imperfect.
- Upgrades. Swapping an old exposed aluminum vent or a crushed roll vent for a baffled, shingle-over vent costs a bit more in material but usually performs better.
- Hidden damage. Rotted decking along the slot or broken fasteners add repair time.
- Minimum charges. Many roofers have a minimum for any repair visit, so short ridges do not scale down much.
When replacement is the right call
Replace the vent when it is cracked, crushed, leaking in wind driven rain, missing end plugs, or when cap shingles have blown off repeatedly. If the shingles across the roof are near the end of their life, the better value is usually to fold the ridge vent into a full replacement, where it is a small line item.
Insurance angle
If hail or wind damaged the ridge, the vent and cap may be part of a storm claim along with the rest of the roof. Photograph the damage before any repair.
