Georgia Roof Guide

Are gutter guards worth it?

Short answer. Gutter guards are usually worth it when overhanging trees force you to clean gutters several times a year or when ladder work is risky, because a quality guard cuts cleaning to occasional checks and prevents the overflow that rots fascia and soaks foundations. They are rarely worth it on homes with few trees, undersized gutters, or when the guard is a cheap insert that clogs anyway.

A simple way to decide

  1. Count cleanings: how many times a year do your gutters need clearing to stay flowing? Once is light; three or more is heavy.
  2. Price your cleaning: what a service charges per visit, or what your time and ladder risk are worth.
  3. Compare over time: a quality guard installed once versus years of cleanings, remembering that guards still need light maintenance.
  4. Count the damage avoided: overflow causes fascia rot, soffit stains, crawlspace or basement water and erosion.

Quality matters most

Rigid micro-mesh guards that attach without disturbing the shingles generally outlast and outperform cheap screens and foam. If your gutters are near the end of their life, buy guards with new seamless gutters. Robust Roofing goes deeper in its guide to gutter guards in leaf country. Also read gutters, sizing and guards.
