Georgia Roof Guide

Are architectural shingles better than regular shingles?

Short answer. Yes, for most homeowners, and the value math is the clearest reason. Architectural shingles cost somewhat more than regular 3-tab shingles, but because labor, tear-off and accessories cost the same either way, the total job rises only modestly while expected life and wind performance improve, so architectural usually costs less per year of service.

Where the money goes in a reroof

The shingles are only one line on the bill. Tear-off and disposal, labor, underlayment, leak barrier, drip edge, flashing, pipe boots, vents, ridge cap and the permit cost about the same whichever shingle you choose. So a material upgrade changes the total far less than the per-bundle price suggests.

Cost per year, simply

Divide the roof's price by the years it lasts. If an architectural roof costs, for example, 10 percent more than a 3-tab roof but lasts 25 percent longer, its cost per year is lower. In Georgia, where 3-tab roofs often wear out in 15 to 20 years and architectural roofs commonly last 20 to 30, that math usually favors architectural.

Resale

Buyers and home inspectors read a 3-tab roof as older and closer to replacement. A newer architectural roof is a selling point, and it can head off repair requests during a sale.

Repairs and storms

3-tab colors are getting harder to match, so even small repairs on a 3-tab roof can look patchy. Architectural shingles also lose fewer tabs to wind, which means fewer repair calls between replacements.

When regular shingles still win

A detached shed, a rental you plan to sell soon, or a repair that must match an existing 3-tab roof. For everything else, the architectural premium tends to pay for itself. See roof replacement cost in Georgia and architectural vs 3-tab shingles.
